Participating in The Canada-Japan Coop Program is one of the smartest decisions I made throughout my life. My internship in Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corporation (NTT), Japan has been a remarkable experience. From learning technical knowledge from Statistical Machine Translation, actually working on large real-world systems to learning and communicating with my co-workers in Japanese and the opportunity to learn about the Japanese culture and history has been incredible. My wonderful and brilliant Japanese co-workers encouraged me to learn more about the issue areas I was interested in and were more than willing to share their extensive knowledge. I will always remember having a picnic with them under a beautiful Sakura tree and attending a year-end party with everybody in NTT in the ancient Nara hotel. Some other highlights included travelling around Japan, experiencing Japanese culture and learning to be independent. I feel privileged to have had this opportunity and am confident that this experience will help in all my future endeavors.
I would like to thank the Canada-Japan Coop Program and NTT for this rewarding opportunity. This is definitely a turning point in my life.
今までの人生の中で、インターンシップで日本にいた一年は私にとって最高の一年でした。
以前、母が日本で働いていたことがあったので、日本人に接する機会も多く、あまり話はしませんでしたが、優しいという印象を持っていました。そして、母から様々な日本についての話を教えてもらっていたので、日本にものすごく憧れていました。そして、日本で働くことは昔からの私の夢でした。
ある日、友達と話していた時、偶然 Canada-Japan Co-op Programのことを教えてもらいました。日本での仕事が決まる可能性がどのぐらいあるのか分かりませんでしたが、とにかく日本でのインターンシップを申し込もうと思いました。驚いたことに数ヶ月後、日本でのインターンシップが決まったことをCanada-Japan Co-op Programから教えてもらいました。
それから、たくさんの期待を抱いて、私の日本の旅が始まりました。日本での一番印象深いことは、日本人の気質です。普通、仕事中にはあまり話はしませんが、お昼休みの時、幅広い話題を取り上げて話をします。時々、私が気にも留めずに話した話の内容、例えば、今食べたい物や見たいテレビ番組から地球温暖化まで、同僚はちゃんと覚えていました。そして、その話の紹介をよくメールで送ってくれました。私が落ち込んだ時、助けてもらいたい時に同僚は何にも言いませんが、何気なく私の気持ちを支えるメールを送ってくれました。私の心を読み取る能力があるようです。
日本の商品は品質が良いと言われていますが、日本の商品だけでなく、それは人間性にも当てはまると感じられます。日本人は、職場や生活などで人に対していつでも笑いながら丁寧に応対していますし、ほかの人のことも大事に考える事ができます。私はこんな素晴らしい考え方を本当に尊敬します！この日本での一年間、色々な技術についての経験を学んだことより、この日本人の気質に触れたことが私のインターンシップの成功の鍵ではないかと思います。
日本でこのもっとも大切だと思えることを勉強できたことを、私は大変嬉しく思っています。日本での一年間で素晴らしいと思えるものが見つかって、私の人生は変わりました！
