Barry Chai

Engineering Physics
The University of British Columbia
Toshiba Corporation May 2007 – July 2007

My internship in Japan was full of excitement. Opportunities exist for one to be involved in frontiers of research. Companies tend to accommodate the technical interests of the interns. My supervisor and teammates were also extremely helpful at work. We were able to communicate ideas effectively as they spoke English very well.

Besides work, I was welcomed to the team's social events and parties which helped me to know the researchers on a personal level. At Toshiba, there were also foreign researchers from all over the world. They became good companions for learning the language and travelling.

For someone considering overseas co-op, I definitely recommend considering Japan. You can experience a very different culture and pick up a language. Also the opportunity of building connections with foreign researchers can be extremely valuable in the long term.
